Philippe Cavaleri multi-disciplinary work explores the relationship between body, space & time, how they interact & affect each other …

He uses all possible media & materials, without restriction : photography and the moving image (video, stop motion, super 8 films, …), drawings, sounds experimentations (home made sound generators, turntables, cassettes & tapes, field recordings, …)

He likes to combine everything in installations, where images meet sounds in the space…

He is interested in gesture/movement, granularity, residues, ‘everyday banality as poetry’, territories & limits, parasites, communication & linguistic (language – as arts? – is suppose to be the human way to understand ‘reality’ and share it) …

For years he is sharing his passions with kids & adults in experimental media workshops…

Philippe Cavaleri has exhibited and gave sound performances in art galleries, cultural centers, artist residencies, in Russia, Italy, Turkey, Switzerland, Belgium, Spain, Holland, Poland, Czech Republic, Canada, Bulgaria, Germany, Hungary, .. .

In 2009 his work has been selected for the Tempus Arti by the art curator Jan Hoet ((Kassel Documenta IX). Following a conversation on the concept of time with his little boy, and influenced by texts of Zen philosophy and quantum physics, the installation consisted of three large photographs hung in the exhibition space, a film loop projected directly on the wall and accompanied by a sound creation …

In September 2012, he had a sound installation call ‘Principe de vacuité’ (‘Principle of vacuity’) on the main square of Huy (medieval town in Belgium), for the art festival Dédale. 50 chinese praying juke box & home made generators, played in loop in an architectural structure. In 2016, he has been comissioned by Transculture to propose a new version of the work, shown at the sound art festival City Sonic, in Mons – Belgium.

In his film ‘Fragments de lumière’ (‘Fragments of light’ – 2011 – 21 minutes – 23.000 images), he took photographies of bodies moving in a white cocoon, trying to find their own place, moving in a poetic gesture, a fragmented choreography …

His sound performance “En temps réel” is based on found and given tapes, field recordings, along with super 8 films from found footage & personal experimentation with this media… It all started with tapes, found lying on the ground… Sound tests before lectures, or erased & recycled with remaining fragments of speeches (in many different languages, arabic chinese french russian…, all mixed together to create a new form of communication), small dictaphone tapes from answering machine or just containing hiss & noises… Everything was there, waiting for a re-composition…
